What is a ventilator?

A ventilator is a machine that helps move air in and out of the lungs of a patient unable to adequately breathe on his or her own. A specialized tube is placed through either the nose or mouth and is directed into the trachea or windpipe. The tube is then connected to the ventilator so the machine can deliver oxygenated air to the lungs at a volume and pressure determined by the individual patient’s needs.

Patients in need of ventilator support are critically ill to the point that they are expected to die without the help of the ventilator. Having a breathing tube in the throat is uncomfortable so ventilator patients are often sedated. A patient is not able to speak with a breathing tube in the throat.
