What is ECMO?

ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is a therapy where a patient’s blood cycles through a heart-lung machine that adds oxygen to the blood and pumps it back through the body. It is sometimes also called ECLS, or extracorporeal life support.

Patients who need ECMO have life-threatening illnesses that prevents the heart and/or lungs from working as they should. ECMO temporarily takes over the some of the work of the heart and lungs to give the patient time for those vital organs to heal.
