What is palliative or comfort care at the end of life?

Palliative treatment, or comfort care, is supportive treatment aimed at prevention and relief of suffering by thoughtfully attending to a patient’s pain, shortness of breath, anxiety, or other distressing symptoms. It incorporates attention to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient.

Comfort care measures allow the natural process of death to occur in a supportive setting without trying to delay or hasten it. The primary goals of a palliative care plan are to keep patients comfortable, to honor their wishes throughout the dying process, and to preserve their dignity.
